Baptism - Joining with Jesus' Followers in Jesus' Mission

Baptism is an important decision, which will have life-long implications. This is true if you are an adult seeking to be baptized or if you are a seeking baptism for your child. The day of your baptism or your child’s baptism is the beginning of a long relationship with the Church. We take our responsibilities to you seriously also.

When do Baptisms Happen?

Baptism generally takes place during Sunday Morning celebrations of the Eucharist. As it is a sacrament that celebrates initiation into the Body of Christ, it is most appropriately celebrated in the context of the faithful assembled together as community.

Will There be Classes?

Before each Baptism at St Andrew's there will be a time of teaching about what baptism is, why we practice baptism and why it is important in the life of our community, the candidate for baptism, and the sponsors. This time of preparation will usually consist of one or two sessions with the rector. Where possible sponsors (godparents) are expected to attend.

What Commitments Do I Make?

In Baptism some significant promises are made. Amongst others you will be asked to make these commitments:

• Will you be responsible for seeing that the child you present is nurtured in the faith and life of the Christian community?

• Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your saviour?

Our Church community will also be asked questions:

• Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ?

While you commit to raise a child in the church, the community commits to help you make that a possibility and to support you in your faith journey.
